One particularly meaningful moment took place in 2018, when Melinda Gates visited Southwest Early Learning Bilingual Preschool (SWEL). Her visit celebrated SWEL and the Refugee & Immigrant Family Center (RIFC)—led by Karina Rojas Rodriguez and Luz Casio, respectively—being recognized by the Gates Foundation as model dual language programs. This designation highlighted the strength of SCCS’s approach to bilingual education—one that honors cultural identity while promoting kindergarten readiness and long-term success for children.

During her time, Melinda had the opportunity to see classrooms in action, connect with educators, and witness the impact of high quality dual language programming. Her visit not only recognized the exceptional work happening at SWEL and RIFC but also honored the broader contributions of SCCS. This moment stands as a powerful affirmation of SCCS’s mission and reflects our commitment to ensuring families from all backgrounds are seen and celebrated.
